OurCoop opened the doors to its brand-new FoodCoop store in Rainhill on the 19th of March, creating 20 new jobs and bringing a modern, community-focused shopping space to the area.
The store was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Sally Britch, Project Lead from St Helens Foodbank, signifying the store’s commitment to supporting local people and organisations.
Designed with sustainability, convenience and community benefit in mind, the Rainhill store includes a range of features to support customers while reducing environmental impact. Solar panels installed across the site help reduce energy use, while bird and bat boxes have been added to support local wildlife. Inside, a striking internal wall graphic celebrates the connection to the local area.
Outside, customers will find a small community garden and seating area, as well as two rapid electric vehicle charging spaces, delivered in partnership with Zest, supporting the transition to cleaner transport for local residents and visitors.
Customers can enjoy a wide range of modern services, including:
- InPost lockers
- Bicycle repair station
- Costa Coffee
- COOK food range
- Customer toilet and baby changing facilities
- Free water refill station
- Defibrillator
- Free Wi-Fi
To celebrate opening day, the first 50 customers took part in a golden ticket raffle, winning a range of prizes as well as the chance to win a £1,000 Co-op Holidays voucher.
Simon Smith, Head of Commercial and Format Development at OurCoop, said: “It’s been a fantastic first day at Rainhill today, the sun has shone all day and many customers have told us how impressed they are with the range in store – from freshly squeezed orange juice to delicious fresh pastries, and all the usual essentials of course. This store has been designed to offer customers a convenient place to shop while incorporating sustainable features that support the local environment.”
One customer said she was looking forward to sitting in the community garden in summer with a drink from the in-store Costa coffee machine.
The store also features a carefully curated food range, including GSN, a market-leading health food brand specialising in high-protein, whole-food products. Alongside this, customers can shop the popular COOK range, known for its frozen ready meals made with fresh ingredients and a homemade taste, offering high-quality, convenient options for individuals and families.
Customers at the new store can become members to enjoy exclusive offers across OurCoop’s family of businesses, which includes FoodCoop, Co-op Travel, Little Pioneers Nursery, FuneralCoop. EnergyCoop, MobileCoop, and BroadbandCoop. OurCoop's members own its stores, so membership means having a positive impact on the community with every purchase - whether it’s a pint of milk or a holiday booking.
