Central Co-op funeral colleagues climb Snowdon for charity hailed ‘Co-op Heroes’

As part of Co-op Fortnight 2025 (23rd June – 6th July), Central Co-op is celebrating the everyday heroes behind the scenes who make a big difference in their communities. Including two of its colleagues – Sophie Cale and Evonie Day - Funeral Service Assistants from Stirchley Funeral Home who have been recognised as true “Co-op Heroes”.
This year’s Co-op Fortnight theme, #CoopHeroes, shines a spotlight on the inspiring stories of people whose lives have been made better by co‑ops, and individuals in co‑ops making other people’s lives better. These stories are living proof that co-operators make a huge positive difference in the world – with Sophie and Evonie among of them.
In the early hours of the morning, Sophie and Evonie were climbing one of the UK’s highest peaks. They took on the Snowdon Sunrise Challenge to raise funds for The Lily Mae Foundation, a charity that supports parents and families affected by the loss of a baby.
Their challenge was no small feat. Setting off at 1am to reach the summit in time for sunrise, they completed their descent by 7am - walking through darkness, grief and solidarity alongside those affected by child bereavement. So far, the pair have raised over £700, with more still coming in.
Sophie was personally supported by The Lily Mae Foundation after her own loss. She works with Evonie at Central Co-op’s funeral home in Stirchley to help others at their most vulnerable. When the opportunity arose to support the charity, she and Evonie didn’t hesitate.
Sophie commented: “We just wanted to give something back. The Lily Mae Foundation helps families when they need it most, and we see every day how important that support is.”
Sophie and Evonie are among few colleagues being profiled by Central Co-op this Co-op Fortnight as part of Co-operatives UK’s ‘We Can Be Heroes’ storytelling campaign – part of Co-op Fortnight and the UN’s International Year of Co-operatives celebrations in 2025.
Sophie and Evonie’s actions demonstrate the compassionate spirit of co-operation in action – bringing hope and healing to others, one step at a time.
