On the 19th of March, Central Co-op celebrated the 50th anniversary of Bretby Crematorium, a cherished place of peace, reflection and remembrance for families across Derbyshire and beyond. Since its establishment, Bretby has provided a serene and supportive environment for those saying goodbye to loved ones, offering a dignified and respectful farewell in a natural woodland setting.

Nestled off the A511 between Burton-on-Trent and Swadlincote, Bretby Crematorium has become known for its tranquil, natural surroundings. Unlike traditional crematoria, Bretby is maintained as a woodland space, free from plaques and memorial stones, ensuring a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can feel connected to nature while remembering their loved ones.

The two service rooms on-site, Cedar and Willow, provide calming spaces for families to hold meaningful services. With options for personalised lighting, music and visual tributes, families can tailor services to reflect the life and personality of their loved ones.

As part of Central Co-op’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing the experience for families, the business invested £500,000 in 2022 to regenerate and improve the facilities at Bretby Crematorium. This investment ensures that the crematorium remains a beautiful and well-maintained space, continuing to provide comfort and solace to visitors.

Bretby Crematorium is at the forefront of environmentally responsible funeral care. Since 2010, carbon emissions have been reduced by 76%, and the site is maintained as a thriving habitat for local wildlife. Many families choose to scatter ashes within the woodland, embracing a more natural and eco-friendly farewell.

The compassionate team at Bretby Crematorium plays a vital role in supporting families. From crematorium officers assisting with service preparations to technicians maintaining the site, every colleague is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of care, dignity and respect. In recognition of their hard work and dedication, colleagues were gifted a bottle of fizz to celebrate this special milestone.

Lee Bevan, Head of Funeral at Central Co-op, said: “For half a century, we’ve been part of the Bretby community, providing a peaceful setting for families to say their goodbyes and supporting local funeral directors with a beautiful location for final farewells. We're honoured to have played a role in so many lives, offering comfort and care during difficult times. Thank you to our community for your trust over the past five decades.”

As Bretby Crematorium reaches this significant milestone, Central Co-op remains committed to providing a place of peace, reflection and remembrance for generations to come. The crematorium continues to evolve, ensuring it meets the needs of families while maintaining its commitment to sustainability and compassionate service.
