£1,000 keeps Flash Ley pupils learning
Central England Co-operative’s Membership and Community Councils have granted £1,000 to pupils from Flash Ley Primary School so that they can replace educational resources lost when the school was evacuated because of toxic chemicals.
Flash Ley Community Primary School was closed in October so that a ‘strong odour’ which was thought to be linked to pupil illness could be investigated. Although the entire school of 420 pupils has been temporarily relocated to nearby Chetwynd Centre the school’s educational resources had to remain in the old building and, if contaminated, will be permanently lost.
James Knight, Membership and Community Relations Officer at Central England Co-operative said: “When our Membership and Community Council for the area heard that the school was in desperate need of books and other educational resources they were delighted to be able to help immediately by granting £1,000 for guided reading books. Our nearby Rising Brook Food Store has also been supporting the school by raising funds in-store.”
Simon Barker, Head Teacher for Flash Ley Primary School said: “It’s wonderful that Central England Co-operative is helping our school at this difficult time. The pupils and teachers are coping brilliantly in difficult circumstances but some key things we need in order to maintain our high educational standards are stationery, books and other educational resources. One thousand pounds will buy a large number of books and is a great help to the school. We are very grateful for the financial support Central England Co-operative has given us.”
Central England Co-operative’s Membership and Community Councils are passionate about the area where they operate and seek to make a real difference in their locality, by acting as the link between The Co-operative and their local communities. Roles include representing the views of local people and seeking opportunities for community activity involvement. The society has three Membership and Community Councils with each representing Eastern, Central and Western constituencies.
